We know many people have a lot of questions about acupuncture and we want to help give you anwers. Following are five of the top myths we’ve heard about acupuncture.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a technique using small steel needles to penetrate the skin in various areas to help trigger natural healing capabilities of the body. According to the World Health Organization, acupuncture remains the most common traditional form of medicine practice and has been used for over 2,500 years. We offer the traditional use of needling at our wellness center as well as cupping and laser acupuncture if you are uncomfortable with needles. Through acupuncture, you can find relief for many emotional and physical discomforts.

Top 5 Myths about Acupuncture

1. Acupuncture needles are the same used in shots and IVs.

Acupuncture needles are very small in comparison to hypodermic needles use for shots and IVs and according to the Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (CCAOM) 30 acupuncture needles can fit into a hypodermic needle. They are often referred to as “painless needles” and many patients do not even feel them being inserted. If the thought of needles still makes you feel uneasy, we also offer cupping and laser acupuncture.

2. Acupuncture needles are not clean.

Under the Clean Needle Technique, single-use stainless steel acupuncture needles are the standard practice creating a low risk of infection.

3. Once you start acupuncture, you will always need it.

At first, we may have you come frequently for acupuncture sessions, but once the condition is resolved you will be able to suspend your sessions. However, including maintenance sessions in your calendar will help reduce the risk of the same condition returning!

4. Acupuncture is not science-based.

While acupuncture therapies originated in ancient Chinese medicine, the World Health Organization recognizes it as an effective complementary and alternative medicine. In 2003, their study found that over 43 diseases, conditions, and symptoms are treatable with acupuncture.

5. Acupuncture is only useful for treating physical pain.
